As storm Katie battered the UK over Easter, Wheels in Motion Sheffield, a wheelchair dancing group based in High Green, Sheffield, took the world by storm in the wheelchair dancing championships in Cuijk, Holland. Wheels in Motion Sheffield, representing Great Britain were one of the largest groups there.
Competing against 240 competitors from 18 countries, the competition was going to be tough but Wheels in Motion were prepared. The competition began on the Saturday morning with a flag parade, Bobbie and Jenny from Wheels in Motion being asked to be the flag bearers for Great Britain, a great honour.
Some of the member of Wheels in Motion had not competed before, others knew how thought the competition was going to be, so no one expected anything. To come away with 2 golds, 1 silver, 1 bronze and 4th and 6th place was unbelievable.
The competition carried on to the second day, Easter Sunday, this time Chris and Holly being asked to be the flag bearers. Again, Wheels in Motion were competing against some of the best dancers in the world, and again with no expectations. But they did it again – 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze, 2 fourths a 5th and a 6th.
Coach June Higgins (or Coach Juney as she is known by the team) couldn’t have been more proud of her dream team, saying “It isn’t about the winning, it isn’t about the taking part, it is about the making of the memories.” And this we did, lots and lots of very happy ones, my team members saying that wheelchair dancing had changed their lives.
Wheels in Motion Sheffield are self-funded, and couldn’t have done this trip without the help of Sheffield Community Transport, and their fabulous driver Martin Adams. However, all this could end because as the group grows, they need to find a bigger bus with a lift that can take all of the team plus their wheelchairs to any future competitions, home or abroad. The group continues to raise funds for this, but have yet to find a bus. If you can help, please contact June Higgins – 0114 2845738.
Also, if you think you would like to try wheelchair dancing, or know someone who would, again please contact June on the above number.
